Flys
When I first started flats fishing I didn’t have a clue to what to use. I had read about the many patterns from crabs to shrimp. Everybody had their opinion and instructions. I spent lots of time changing flies and leaders trying to gain confidence. Finally I came up with my own design(s) which have their origin rooted in the traditional patterns yet are quite different.
ELECTRIC DREAD
The ELECTRIC DREAD is probably the #1 overall fly. This fly has slammed bonefish without looking back and is standard for me on calm days. It has proven to be deadly on every single gamefish on the flats and has produced more than 1 Grand Slam …these flys can be bought at the Flyshop of Miami so if you can’t tie your own they will take care of you. Take look at my tutorial on how to tie your own.
CORDELITO STONED CRAB
CORDELITO STONED CRAB is another breakout pattern. It is also a play on words. My name translated in Spanish means “string”. The crab is made of HEMP STRING and mimics baby stone crabs. Permit really like this fly and I have had very good results in getting them to take it. Tarpon and Bones will also slam it without hesitation. You can swim it on the top or let it dive.
SPEED DART
The SPEED DART is the last fly I use. It is a cross between a clouser and a crazy charlie. I use calf tail and tie very sparse on the hook. The fly will drop straight to the bottom and is superior in deep water or windy days when speed is everything. It too will get everything that swims.
I am not a professional tier. I am self taught. I will supply flies for the day but will sell them for those willing to pay and wait for me to tie them. I usually wait until bad fishing days before I start on such projects. Here are the prices…
